Jeollanam-do has begun inspecting the International Namdo Food Culture Festival and the Myeongnyang Battle Festival. On the 3rd, Jeollanam-do held a basic plan inspection report meeting for the two major festivals hosted by the province, the ’30th International Namdo Food Culture Festival’ and the ’16th Myeongnyang Battle Festival’, at the Jeollanam-do Office’s Jeongcheolsil, and intensively discussed ways to foster them into world-class festivals.
The report meeting that day was presided over by former South Jeolla Province Deputy Governor Myung Chang-hwan, and was attended by about 30 people including the executive committee chairs of each festival, Professor Kim Byeong-won of Mokpo National University, Professor Jeong Gi-yeong of Sehan University, and members of South Jeolla Province, Mokpo City, Haenam County, Jindo County, and advisory committee members.
Following the announcement of the festival director’s basic plan, attendees had an open discussion to discuss ways to hold a successful event and foster a world-class festival.
The International Namdo Food Culture Festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, will be held for three days starting September 27th at the Mokpo City Culture and Arts Center.
At last year’s event, Jeollanam-do declared the first year of the International Jeollanam-do Food Culture Festival as an international event. This year, the province is preparing a program to foster it as a world-class festival in conjunction with the ‘2024~2026 Jeollanam-do World Tourism Culture Festival’ that the province is promoting with the goal of globalizing Jeollanam-do tourism. Through the ‘Pre-Gourmet Industry Expo’, which is a preliminary event for the ‘2025 International Gourmet Industry Expo’ scheduled to be held in Mokpo in October next year, excellent product evaluations of agricultural, fishery, and food products, and export consultations for companies will be promoted.
We will strengthen the ‘foodie content’ that captures the colors of the southern region, such as the ‘Namdo Taste Tour’ with Namdo cuisine experts, and in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the festival, we will also newly operate a special theme hall and food tech hall that shed new light on the tradition and future of Namdo cuisine. In addition, we will introduce a ‘World Gourmet Zone’ to globalize Namdo cuisine, and we plan to promote a fam tour for foreigners, such as officials of foreign embassies in Korea and US troops stationed in Korea.
The ‘Myeongnyang Battle Festival’ is a festival to commemorate the Myeongnyang Battle, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Joseon navy and Jeolla-do fishermen fought against the Japanese navy at Uldolmok and won a great victory. It is held jointly by Jeollanam-do, Jindo-gun, and Haenam-gun.
This year, the festival will coincide with the historic Battle of Myeongnyang victory day (September 16th in the lunar calendar), and will be held for three days starting October 18th at Jindo Nokjin Tourist Site, Haenam Usuyeong Tourist Site, and other Uldolmok areas.
Jeollanam-do plans to strengthen the identity of the Myeongnyang Battle Festival as a national historical and cultural festival and to create content that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity. To this end, it plans to plan a hyper-realistic naval battle using ICT convergence technology and multimedia, and also newly promote a Myeongnyang Battle academic seminar to establish a strategy for the inheritance of historical culture and the fostering of a sustainable festival.
We plan to expand the participation of local artists, create differentiated programs utilizing local cultural and artistic content, and develop experiential and participatory content centered on tourists and strengthen advance promotions to create a world-class festival.
Vice Governor Myung Chang-hwan said, “The two major festivals hosted by the province are events that comprehensively showcase Jeollanam-do’s food, history, and traditional culture,” and added, “We will foster them into global festivals representing the Republic of Korea through organic cooperation between the province and cities and counties and festival operation that takes into account the environment, social responsibility, and management structure centered on tourists and a sustainable management strategy (ESG).”
