Jeollanam-do, Gwangju City, and KEPCO are cooperating to expand renewable energy. On the 23rd, Jeollanam-do signed a business agreement with KEPCO, Gwangju City, and Korea Electric Power Corporation to expand the production and distribution of renewable energy in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, and held a ceremony to launch the Gwangju and Jeollanam-do Energy Industry Convergence Complex Management Committee, the first of its kind in the country.

At the signing ceremony, former South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung, and KEPCO President Kim Dong-cheol attended and agreed to cooperate to promote the production and distribution of new and renewable energy and to expand the power grid early, and to operate a working-level consultative body to ensure smooth implementation of the agreement.

South Jeolla Province plans to present measures, through the working-level consultative body, to minimize restrictions on the access of renewable energy to grid management substations, expand two 345 kV flexible networks for the metropolitan area-linked energy highway to increase grid acceptance, and build consumer-type 345 kV substations in existing and new industrial complex development areas.

After the agreement, the Gwangju-Jeonnam Energy Industry Convergence Complex Management Committee was launched. The launching ceremony was attended by about 200 people, including Governor Kim Young-rok, Mayor Kang Ki-jeong, President Kim Dong-cheol, Energy Policy Director of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Choi Yeon-woo, representatives of energy-related companies, academics, and local residents.

The Gwangju-Jeonnam Energy Industry Convergence Complex is developing into a center that leads regional economic growth and sustainable development by converging cutting-edge energy technologies such as renewable energy, smart grids, and energy storage systems (ESS).

The steering committee launched on this day is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering energy-focused industries through cooperation among industry, academia, research institutes, and government, promoting innovation in line with the changing industrial environment, and creating jobs and revitalizing the economy in the region.

The launching ceremony was divided into two parts. Part 1 included welcoming and congratulatory remarks, followed by an announcement of KEPCO’s strategy to vitalize the energy industry convergence complex ecosystem for the creation of the Gwangju-Jeonnam e-Mecca Cluster, a ceremony to launch the convergence complex management committee, a lecture on the creation of a new energy industry ecosystem by Professor Seungwan Kim of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology, and an agreement on the creation of an energy new industry investment ecosystem between KEPCO and the investment holding company.

The current energy industry convergence complex ecosystem has entered a growth phase where convergence linkages and integrations between clusters are beginning, centered around the energy valley. Beyond the integration of energy companies with growth potential, it is a time when integration of all value chains is necessary to create convergence synergies between different industries.

The second part of the event included an introduction of companies that signed the 2024 Energy Valley investment agreement, information on local governments’ energy industry promotion policies, and discussions on the status of measures taken and directions for improvement in response to suggestions made at the meeting with companies that moved in last May.

In addition, Jeollanam-do aims to create a ‘K-Energy Valley’ based on the Gwangju-Jeonnam Energy Industry Convergence Complex to lead energy technology innovation and leap forward as a cutting-edge technology center for the global energy industry.

Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “The launch of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Energy Industry Convergence Complex Management Committee will be an important turning point for regional development and energy industry innovation,” and “We will actively support the Gwangju-Jeonnam Energy Industry Convergence Complex to leap forward as a global energy technology innovation center.”
