The Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province is embarking on the industrialization of hydrogen vehicle waste fuel cell resource recycling. The Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, Wanju County, Korea Testing & Research Institute for Chemical Industry (KTR), and Woosuk University signed a business agreement and decided to join forces to foster the industry related to hydrogen vehicle waste fuel cell resource recycling.

The Jeonbuk Autonomous Province announced that on the afternoon of the 26th at 2:00 in the conference room of the provincial government building, it signed a “MOU for the establishment of a specialized testing and certification center for hydrogen vehicle waste fuel cell resource recycling” with the attendance of Jeonbuk Autonomous Province Governor Kim Kwan-young, Wanju County Governor Yoo Hee-tae, KTR Director Kim Hyeon-cheol, and Woosuk University President Park No-jun.

This agreement aims to reach an agreement on basic matters such as the roles of each organization for the smooth progress of the project, and includes the following: △Permits and administrative/financial support from Jeonbuk Autonomous Province and Wanju County, △Establishment and implementation of detailed business plans by KTR and Woosuk University, establishment of domestic and international networks, and recruitment of excellent local human resources, etc., and contributions to the local community.

Through the agreement, the participants promised to implement a circular economy through remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling of spent hydrogen fuel cells, and to join forces to revitalize the local economy and create new jobs.

The ‘Project to Establish a Specialized Testing and Certification Center for Hydrogen Vehicle Waste Fuel Cell Resource Recycling’ was applied for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s Industrial Innovation Base Establishment Project competition in June and was finally selected in July. It is expected to be an important stepping stone for Jeollabuk-do Autonomous Province to emerge as a center of the hydrogen economy.

It is scheduled to be built in Techno Valley 2nd Industrial Complex, Bongdong-eup, Wanju-gun over a period of 4 years and 6 months from July 2024 to December 2028, and a total budget of 25 billion won will be invested, including 10 billion won from the national budget, 4.5 billion won each from Jeollabuk-do and Wanju-gun, and 6 billion won from the Korea Testing & Research Institute for Chemical Industry, the main organization.

In addition, Woosuk University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Korea Automobile Research Institute, Korea Institute of Energy Research, Korea New and Renewable Energy Association, and Korea Electric Safety Corporation will participate to perform roles appropriate to the characteristics of each institution and foster industries related to hydrogen vehicle waste fuel cell resource recycling through various testing and evaluations, technology development, and commercialization support.

Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Governor Kim Kwan-young said, “With this agreement as an opportunity, we will further strengthen the hydrogen industry ecosystem in the region and work to realize the vision of a global life economy city,” adding, “We plan to continue to lead the development of the hydrogen industry through continuous cooperation and support with excellent hydrogen organizations.”
