Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province has secured 21 billion won in special grants to restore public facilities damaged by heavy rain. Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province has secured 21 billion won in special grants from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to restore public facilities damaged by heavy rain from July 8 to 19.

This special grant is part of the local government budget and is financial support to promote restoration of damaged facilities more quickly.

Of the secured special grants of 21 billion won, 10.5 billion won was allocated to the provincial government and 10.5 billion won to four cities and counties (Gunsan, Iksan, Wanju, Muju) that suffered serious damage from the heavy rain. As a result, an amount equivalent to 45.7% of the local government budget burden was reduced, and the financial burden of the provincial government and cities and counties was greatly alleviated.

Due to the record-breaking heavy rain in July, 435 public facilities were damaged in the Jeonbuk region, and a total of 45.9 billion won (215 billion won from the provincial government and 244 billion won from the city/county government) will be required to repair them.

The disaster safety special grants secured this time will be distributed to cities and counties in the province through swift administrative procedures, and will be used primarily for design costs and restoration work. The province and cities and counties plan to cooperate to swiftly proceed with land compensation and related administrative procedures and begin restoration work.

In addition, we plan to thoroughly manage small-scale damaged facilities worth less than 300 million won by completing restoration before the rainy season next year, and facilities worth more than 300 million won by completing major construction before the rainy season to prevent additional secondary damage.

Jeonbuk Provincial Safety Office Director Yoon Dong-wook said, “The large-scale damage caused by the monsoon rains last July placed a huge burden on local finances, but thanks to the special grants secured early this time, we will be able to proceed with recovery quickly,” adding, “We will do our best to recover from the damage to protect the lives and property of the provincial residents.”

Meanwhile, the average rainfall in the province from July 8 to 19 was 265mm, and 26,622 cases (26,187 private, 435 public) of damage occurred in 14 cities and counties in the province. The total damage amounted to 58.7 billion won, and 4 cities and counties including Iksan and Wanju were declared special disaster areas. The total recovery cost is expected to be 215.7 billion won (233 private, 192.4 public), and the province plans to speed up the recovery based on this.
