President Yoon Seok-yeol on the 15th nominated Jeong Hye-jeon, a former journalist and senior administrative officer at the Public Relations Planning Secretary’s Office, as the new spokesperson for the Office of the President. The current spokesperson, Kim Soo-kyung, was nominated as the Vice Minister of Unification.
Lee Do-woon, Senior Secretary to the President for Public Relations, announced this appointment at a briefing held at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the same day. Regarding the nominee, Lee said, “I expect the new spokesperson to be an excellent communication partner with the press going forward.”
Spokesperson Jeong Shin-im worked as a reporter and anchor at Segye Ilbo, Maeil Kyungjae, Chosun Ilbo, and TV Chosun. After that, he worked at private companies such as McKenzie & Company and IHQ, and since the end of last year, he has been working as a senior administrative officer at the Office of the President’s Public Relations Planning Secretary. He received his master’s degree from Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.
Spokesperson Jeong Shin-im said, “I feel a great sense of responsibility as I take on the role of spokesperson during these difficult times,” and added, “Journalists are the first citizens the Presidential Office meets. In order to communicate and persuade the citizens, I believe that communicating with the media and providing explanations is a priority.”
He continued, “I will make sure to clearly state that what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong,” and “The spokesperson is not only in the position to speak, but also to listen. I will convey well and listen well. I will visit (the press room) often and become a spokesperson who communicates closely and clearly.”
Regarding the newly appointed Vice Minister of Unification, the chief said, “Based on his experience communicating with the media, I expect that he will successfully pursue a unification policy that is in line with the people as the Vice Minister of Unification.”
After working as a reporter for the Dong-A Ilbo, Vice Minister Kim received a Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University in the United States. He served as a research fellow at the Institute for Unification Studies, a member of the Ministry of Unification’s Unification Education Committee and Policy Advisory Committee, and a professor at Hanshin University. In the Yoon Seok-yeol government, he served as the presidential secretary for unification and spokesperson.
