Jeonnam Province has begun creating the country’s first ‘compound semiconductor ecosystem’. Jeollanam-do has attracted compound semiconductor companies with promising future growth and has begun to create a compound semiconductor ecosystem for the first time in Korea.

On the 28th, Jeonnam Province held a 134 billion won agreement with seven companies, including Wavepia Co., Ltd., GMJCO Co., Ltd., Inprism Co., Ltd., Sun Korea Co., Ltd., Grit CIC Co., Ltd., All Intech Co., Ltd., and Costexis Co., Ltd. (Seomyeon), at the Provincial Office Seojaepil Office. An investment agreement was signed.

At the agreement ceremony, attended by South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, Muan County Governor Kim San, Wavepia CEO Lee Sang-hoon, and JMJECO CEO Choi Yun-hwa, it was decided to join forces in creating a compound semiconductor ecosystem centered on the Muan Aviation Maintenance (MRO) Industrial Complex.

Compound semiconductors are a key component needed to foster national high-tech strategic industries such as aerospace, communications, and defense, and demand is growing explosively around the world, with the market size expected to increase from $2.9 billion in 2021 to $18.7 billion in 2030.

In order to dominate the compound semiconductor market, which is a semiconductor blue ocean and a next-generation semiconductor, Jeonnam Province established the Compound Semiconductor Center at Mokpo National University last year and is building a full-cycle total solution including design, manufacturing, and packaging.

In addition, efforts are being made to integrate compound semiconductor companies, and this has resulted in attracting semiconductor specialized companies for the first time. In particular, efforts are being made to designate the Muan Aviation Maintenance Industrial Complex, an investment target area, as a special semiconductor opportunity development zone.

According to the agreement, Wavepia Co., Ltd. will invest 40 billion won to establish a research center for compound semiconductor design and post-process (packaging) technology development and an aerospace parts reliability center. JMJECO Co., Ltd. will invest 50 billion won to build a power module back-end process (packaging) research center and a back-end process (packaging) parts mass production plant.

Inprism Co., Ltd. will invest 10 billion won to establish a compound semiconductor design research center and a wireless communication system manufacturing center, and Sun Korea Co., Ltd. will invest 2 billion won to establish a new semiconductor parts factory such as module boxes (cases).

Grit CIC Co., Ltd. invested 1 billion won to establish a compound semiconductor design house center to produce ultra-wideband wireless communication sensors, etc., and All Intech Co., Ltd., a semiconductor measurement equipment sales and maintenance company, invested 1 billion won to develop semiconductor measurement equipment. Establish a maintenance and repair (solution) center.

In addition, Costexys Co., Ltd., which signed a written agreement, will invest 30 billion won to build a power semiconductor thermal management research center and produce new semiconductor heat dissipation materials.

Once the attraction of companies is completed through this investment agreement, about 250 quality jobs are expected to be created in Muan.

CEO Lee Sang-hoon said, “We will do our best to not only generate profits through close cooperation with companies scheduled to move in, but also contribute to revitalizing Jeonnam’s economy and overcoming the crisis of regional extinction.”

Governor Kim Young-rok said, “Many compound semiconductor companies, including design (fabless), post-processing (packaging), materials, parts, and equipment, have been integrated into the Muan aviation maintenance industrial complex.” He added, “Not only to create a compound semiconductor ecosystem, but also to revitalize Muan International Airport. “I expect it will be of great help,” he said.
