The Jeollanam-do and Gyeongnam Regional Committees decided to recommend early enactment of the Special Act on the Development of the South Coastal Area. Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do announced that they agreed to hold a joint workshop between the Jeollanam-do and Gyeongnam Provincial Committees in Hadong, Gyeongnam and Suncheon, Jeollanam-do for two days until the 27th and to jointly propose the early enactment of the Special Act on Development of the South Coast.

This workshop, which was prepared to commemorate the first anniversary of the launch of the Metropolitan City and Provincial Local Government Committees and to look back on the achievements and discuss communication, cooperation and development plans between local government committees, included local council members from both provinces, local government support groups (related public officials), and local industries. About 50 officials including the Promotion Agency (a specialized organization supporting local era support groups) attended.

On the 26th, a special lecture was held in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do with the invitation of Lee Jeong-hyun, Vice Chairman of the Presidential Local Government Committee, on the topic, ‘1st anniversary of the launch of the Local Government Committee, major achievements and future tasks.’ Following this, the Jeonnam Research Institute and the Gyeongnam Research Institute gave presentations on ‘Measures for linking and revitalizing the four major regional special zones’ and ‘Meaning for the development of the southern coastal area’, respectively, and had time to share opinions among the members of the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam Regional Region Committees.

In the presentation on the plan for balanced development in connection with the four special zones of the local era, the major revision directions of the 5th Comprehensive National Territory Plan were discussed in detail, and among the various measures to reborn economic and industrial bases into job creation bases, opportunity development special zones and educational development were discussed. In-depth discussions continued on strengthening competitiveness through linking special zones.

In the presentation on the topic of exploring ways to develop the South Coast and South Central Area, various policy implications were presented in relation to the enactment of the ‘South Coast Special Act’ to strengthen the function of the South Coast and South Central Area Development Council and support the formation of a new base zone centered on Jeonnam and Gyeongnam.

On this day, the Jeonnam-Gyeongnam Local Area Committee mainly focused on balanced regional development plans, such as early enactment of the Special Act on Development of the South Coast Area, which was discussed during the heated discussion, presentation and active promotion of a roadmap for the second relocation of public institutions, and expansion of application to small and medium-sized cities in the special urban convergence zone. It was agreed to write a joint proposal and submit it to the local regional committee, the National Assembly, and central ministries.

On the 27th, we visited the ‘Secret Adventure-4D Stereoscopic Theater’ at Suncheon Bay National Garden in Jeollanam-do, the only one in the country designated as a special opportunity development zone for the cultural content industry, and got to see first-hand the technological capabilities of cultural content produced by ‘Locus’, an anchor company in the opportunity development zone. I had a meaningful time experiencing it.

Cho Sang-pil, chairman of the Jeonnam Local Era Committee, emphasized, “In order to change the worsening unipolar system centered on the metropolitan area and achieve balanced regional development that makes life easier everywhere, Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, which share the southern coast, must become strong partners with each other,” and added, “Through this workshop, “Let’s create an opportunity for the two regional committees to communicate deeply and cooperate closely for the development of the southern coastal area,” he said.
