Meanwhile, South Jeolla Province signed a three-party win-win cooperation business agreement for ‘building a space launch vehicle cluster’ with Hyundai Rotem and Goheung-gun at the Koreana Hotel in Seoul on the 20th.
About 30 officials, including South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, Goheung County Mayor Gong Young-min, and Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae, attended the agreement.
The agreement is intended to develop Goheung, which has been designated as a space launch vehicle specialized district and a space launch vehicle national industrial complex, into the center of the space launch vehicle industry. Hyundai Rotem will actively cooperate in building a space launch vehicle cluster, and South Jeolla Province and Goheung-gun will do their best to provide administrative support.
By combining Hyundai Rotem’s space industry expertise with the infrastructure to be built in Jeonnam, it is expected to serve as an opportunity to create a cutting-edge space industry cluster encompassing launch vehicle research, manufacturing, and commercialization.
South Jeolla Province plans to create Goheung as a hub for the space industry to leap forward into one of the world’s top five space powers based on its geographical strengths and space industry infrastructure centered on the Naro Space Center.
Hyundai Rotem possesses methane engine technology for application to reusable launch vehicles through Korea’s first combustion test, and is actively conducting research to commercialize liquid methane (LNG) launch vehicles. These technologies are expected to greatly contribute to the creation of a national industrial complex and the advancement of the space industry.
County Governor Gong Young-min said, “I hope that Hyundai Rotem, which has secured various experiences and technological capabilities, such as developing Korea’s first methane engine and participating in the Nuriho development project, will lead the launch vehicle market in the future,” and added, “Hyundai Rotem will continue to work hard to develop technology to secure competitiveness in the global space business.” “We will do our best to provide administrative support and improve residential conditions,” he emphasized.
Lee Yong-bae, CEO of Hyundai Rotem, said, “We will contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the domestic space industry by working closely with South Jeolla Province and Goheung-gun to create a space launch vehicle national industrial complex in line with the government’s policy direction.”
Governor Kim Young-rok said, “Hyundai Rotem’s role and cooperation are more important than anything else in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the national space launch vehicle industry,” and added, “We will cooperate in creating the entire space industry cycle, including infrastructure construction, technology development, human resource training, and data utilization, so that Goheung can develop the space launch vehicle.” “We will do our best to ensure the success of the cluster and to establish ourselves as an outpost of one of the world’s top five space powers,” he said.
