Jeollanam-do is taking the lead in the global DC industry market worth 14 trillion won. Jeollanam-do is embarking on joint research with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany to develop DC industry power equipment in order to take the lead in the global DC industry market, which is estimated to grow to 14 trillion won by 2029.

The Jeollanam-do delegation, consisting of approximately 30 people including Jeollanam-do, regional research institutes, and companies participating in joint research and development (R&D), visited Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, together with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on joint research in the direct current industry for the construction of a future power grid with the Fraunhofer Institute on the 16th (local time).

Germany is pursuing a policy of converting its main power source to renewable energy with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045, expanding renewable energy power generation facilities and carrying out numerous transmission grid construction projects.

Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Province delegation visited the Fraunhofer Institute on this day, signed a business agreement, and inspected the cutting-edge research facilities.

The business agreement includes mutual cooperation for the development of the DC industry, including the demonstration of DC power equipment, technology transfer, and knowledge sharing between researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute, Kiel University, and eight companies in South Jeolla Province for two years.

The Jeonnam delegation then had an in-depth discussion with experts on the operation of the innovation special zone, including the outlook for renewable energy demand in Germany, the current status of DC power equipment technology development, and safety management.

Prior to the business agreement, Keele University held a seminar with four contents: ▲Strengthening current control function through ATC (Active Thermal converter), ▲Fault management of IOSP (Input-Series Output-Parallel) DC-DC converter (device that transforms direct current voltage), ▲Masheddc grid analysis and control, ▲Integrated analysis of renewable energy (WT and PV) for DC grid, and discussed various cooperation methods such as 1:1 technical consultation matching between companies from both countries and overseas joint research and development.

Kang Sang-gu, former director of the Energy Industry Bureau of South Jeolla Province, said, “Through this cooperation with Germany, we will actively support the establishment of a Korean version of K-Energy Valley through full-cycle demonstrations of DC power equipment and distribution network operation, thereby taking the lead in the global market.”

South Jeolla Province plans to create a 12.1㎢ global innovation special zone for the DC industry in Naju by May 2028. The goal is to dominate the global market for the DC industry through demonstration and certification of power equipment.
