The United Kingdom has launched a new wave of sanctions against Russian personalities or those close to the Kremlin.

Authorities in Jersey, a British crown dependency, announced the freeze on Wednesday “assets estimated at more than $7 billion suspected of being linked” to the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, by virtue of a court decision.

Searches were also carried out at premises in Jersey “suspected of being related to commercial activities” of Mr. Abramovich, according to the press release. The oligarch is on the list of people sanctioned by the UK in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The oligarch is on the list of people sanctioned by the United Kingdom in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which notably led to the sale of the Chelsea club he had bought in 2003.

New sanctions

More generally, the United Kingdom announced on Wednesday to expand, in coordination with the EU, the list of people sanctioned to include 178 pro-Russian separatists, but also new oligarchs and their relatives, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The British government is sanctioning, in coordination with the EU, 178 people who support the illegal breakaway regions of Ukraine”, after “numerous reports last week that Russia was targeting, in a barbaric way, civilians in these regions”announced the executive.
