A open letter published this Friday via Variety brings together more than 150 names of creatives from the Jewish community who have signed in support of the speech that the English filmmaker Jonathan Glazer gave after receiving the award for Best International Film for The Zone of Interest at the 96th Academy Awards.

At the time, Glazer, who is also Jewish, said:

“Our film shows how dehumanization leads us to do the worst. This shaped our past and our present. Today, we stand here as people who reject their Judaism and hijack the Holocaust with an occupation that has caused conflict for many innocent people, whether it be the victims of the October 7 attack on Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?”

However, days after the director condemned, in just over a minute, the brutalities that the Israeli army committed (and continues to commit) against the Palestinian people, near 1000 Jewish artists and executives belonging to Hollywood turned against Jonathan Glazer and they rejected what he had previously said in the Dolby Theatre of the Angels.

Therefore, in the letter in support of the director of Under the Skin (2013), which collects 151 name signatures that openly show their support for the filmmaker, one can read that:

“We are Jewish artists, filmmakers, writers and creative professionals who support Jonathan Glazer’s speech at the 2024 Oscars. We are alarmed to see that some of our colleagues have misunderstood and denounced his words. Their attacks targeting Glazer are an alarming distraction from the escalating Israeli military campaign that has already killed more than 32,000 Palestinians in Gaza and pushed hundreds of thousands to the brink of famine. “We mourn all those who have died in Palestine and Israel over the decades, including the 1,200 Israelis killed and the 250 hostages kidnapped on October 7 following the Hamas attack.”
