A Jewish Couple Targeted in Antisemitic Attack Near Los Angeles Synagogue

A Jewish couple in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, have come forward after being the victims of an antisemitic attack and attempted robbery on their way to their local synagogue. The incident occurred on Saturday, when the couple, identified only as Raphy, 75, and Rebecca, 70, were accosted by a man who reportedly screamed, “Give me your earrings, Jew.”

In a video interview with NBC LA, the couple expressed their shock and determination to continue practicing their faith despite the rising antisemitism across the United States. “At first, it was a shock. There was a huge hard knock on my forehead here,” Raphy said, pointing to his head.

The couple recounted the traumatic experience, with Rebecca describing how the attacker hit her husband with a belt while demanding their earrings. Despite the ordeal, the couple decided to chase their attacker, ultimately leading to his arrest by a local police officer.

The suspect, identified as Jarris Jay Silagi, 44, was booked on allegations of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, and elder abuse, with the added hate crime allegation. In California, a hate crime “enhancement” can lead to additional sentencing if the defendant is convicted.

The attack has left the couple deeply affected, particularly their 13-year-old grandson who expressed concern about wearing a kippah, a skullcap worn by Jewish boys and men.

Despite being bloodied and shaken, Raphy managed to attend his synagogue’s Torah reading just after the incident, visibly showing his resilience and determination to continue practicing his faith.

Rabbi Pini Dunner of Beverly Hills Synagogue, who has been in touch with the couple since the attack, expressed his support, emphasizing the need to address the concerning rise in antisemitic incidents.

As outrage and concern continue to grow, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook assured the community that “this despicable act of hate … will not be tolerated.”

The attack on the Jewish couple is just one of many recent incidents of antisemitic and anti-Arab attacks in the United States, reflecting a concerning trend that has prompted community members and officials to address the issue.

Despite the deep impact of the attack, the Jewish couple’s determination to carry on with their faith sends a powerful message of resilience and hope in the face of hate and prejudice.
