The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) and the Observatory of Antisemitism in Spain warn of an “emergence and an emergency” in the face of anti-Semitic messages after the war between Israel and Hamas caused by the terrorist group’s attacks on October 7 against Israel .

“There are Israelis living here who have called us saying that they are very afraid (…) this entire group at the very least, if not society as a whole, is affected by the outbreak, the tremendous emergency of anti-Semitism that we are experiencing right now. “, stated the president of the Movement against Intolerance and co-director of the Observatory of Antisemitism in Spain, Esteban Ibarra.

During the presentation of the Report on Antisemitism in Spain, these Jewish communities have described as “anti-Semitic” the statements of the vice president of the Government and leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz and also of the acting minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, who spoke of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, they ask politicians to spread messages of peace.

“I have no doubt that they are anti-Semitic,” said the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), Isaac Benzaquén, in relation to the statements of Belarra or Díaz. He himself has clarified that he will not file a complaint but that it is “a reproach.”

Jews reproach the statements of Belarra and Díaz

A few days ago, the Minister of Labor and Vice President of the Government claimed that Israel was perpetrating “war crimes” in the Gaza Strip. “We are talking about war crimes and I have been asking for days to clarify legal responsibilities. The history of Gaza is written,” said the vice president, who participated in the demonstration called by Palestinian organizations, groups and NGOs against Israel’s “genocide” in Palestine in Madrid.

Podemos Minister Belarra, who also attended the demonstration, believes that European leaders, including President Pedro Sánchez, “are not up to the gravity of the circumstances” and insists that Europe has to act now “because “You are going to pay dearly for this hypocrisy of proclaiming human rights all over the world and, when you have to show your face, doing nothing.”

In addition, he called for diplomatic relations to be broken with Israel and for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be brought before the International Criminal Court to be tried “as a war criminal.”

The president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) considers the statements of the acting ministers as “constituting anti-Semitism” and the Jewish communities ask for a “single voice” from the Government, although they affirm that the position of the President of the Government in functions has been “clear and emphatic” despite the “completely different stance” of Podemos and Sumar.
