REPORTAGE – In Israel, Magen David Adom first aiders, often volunteers, of different origins and faiths, work together and share the same values: to serve all populations and to provide relief.
In the basements of the huge building, the operators, staring at the screens, answer the various calls with controlled coolness and in different languages: Hebrew, Arabic, English or French, the team rich in its diversity is able to adapt. You have to understand the situation quickly and react in less than seven seconds.
Concentrated, Ronit Glaser talks on the phone with a person in distress who has dialed 101, the Magen David Adom emergency number. The Israeli organization, a member of the International Committee of the Red Crossfrequently mobilizes abroad to help the victims of natural or humanitarian disasters, as recently, after the earthquake in Türkiye. Locally, first aiders respond to medical emergencies or terrorist attacks. They are renowned for their efficiency and the record speed at which they arrive at the scene.
