Carter, who served as the highest office of the US for the Democrats from 1977 to 1981, has been receiving palliative care since February 2023. In 2015, Carter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which he overcame through radiation treatment. Shortly after Carter’s 99th birthday, his wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away at the age of 96. The couple was married for 77 years.

According to the newspaper, in the state of Georgia, where Carter lives, voting for the presidency can begin as early as October 15. Jimmy Carter’s nephew Jason told the newspaper that Carter has recently been “livelier and is interested in politics and the war in Gaza.”

Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. The Nobel Prize Committee acknowledged his “decades-long tireless efforts for peaceful solutions to international conflicts, for the promotion of democracy and human rights, and for economic and social development.”
