Jindo-gun has formed a welfare task force with 117 people, including public officials, village heads, and electricity, water, and facility experts from 7 towns and villages, and has been providing lifestyle-oriented welfare services such as improving residential environments, supporting living expenses for families in crisis, and discovering welfare blind spots since 2019. Meanwhile, Jindo-gun received the honor of being finally designated as a ‘Cultural City of Korea’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 26th. Jindo-gun plans to present a new urban development model centered on unique traditions and folk culture, with the vision of “Jindo, the island of folk culture.”

The Republic of Korea Cultural City Project is designated by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism with the goal of ‘region-centered cultural development’, and the designated cities will strengthen regional identity and build a sustainable cultural ecosystem.

After Jindo-gun was selected as the site for approval of the Korea Cultural City development plan on December 29, 2023, it went through rigorous procedures including preliminary project promotion, development plan consulting, and deliberation by the Cultural City Deliberation Committee over the past year to reach this final designation.

Under the goal of ‘creating the future landscape of Jindo living through folk culture and art’, various projects were promoted centering around the Jindo Culture City Center, and the main achievements were the ‘Produce Jindo (Namdo Master Yehakdang)’ program, which recruited about 350 students and We operated education and demonstration programs to convey the values ​​and essence of traditional folk culture to the general public.

Through this, Jindo-gun effectively promoted folk culture and arts both internally and externally and laid the foundation for nurturing future generations of cultural and artistic talent.

In addition, through ‘Samrak Market’ and ‘K-Folk Culture Glocal City Festival’, we increased the utilization of city-based places and created a participatory cultural space and festival venue where both local residents and visitors can mingle together. These activities were evaluated as achievements that strengthened the folk cultural identity of Jindo-gun and at the same time contributed to revitalizing urban culture.

In particular, Jindo-gun publicized the city’s cultural charm by utilizing outstanding traditional cultural resources such as poetry, calligraphy, painting, and singing. Through this, Jindo-gun did not stop at simply preserving the value of folk culture, but also succeeded in building a local brand by reinterpreting it with a modern sense, such as operating a ‘digital gallery’.

Based on these efforts, Jindo-gun was highly evaluated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for its cultural sustainability and business vision, and was finally designated as a cultural city of Korea, securing a total project cost of KRW 20 billion.

An official from Jindo-gun said, “The preliminary project that has been promoted for one year was an important process that confirmed the possibility of moving forward as a cultural city in Korea.” He added, “We will use the 20 billion won project cost over the next three years to create a sustainable cultural city environment and create a unique cultural city unique to Jindo-gun.” He expressed his ambition, saying, “I will promote this rich culture to the whole world.”
