Jindo-gun seeks a breakthrough in overcoming regional extinction through the ‘Jindo 242 Asteroid Project’. The ‘Jindo 242 Asteroid Project’, which is being promoted by Jindo-gun, is attracting attention as a resident-led Jindo-type Saemaeul Movement, and is emerging as a new breakthrough to solve the problem of regional extinction.
This project is a project in which 242 villages in Jindo-gun take the lead in creating beautiful villages under the goal of ‘communication, happiness, and growth.’ The goal is to revitalize the village, revitalize the local community, and respond to the problem of population decline by participating and utilizing local resources.
The project began six years ago in Yeondong Village, Gogun-myeon, Jindo-gun. In the spirit of ‘We take care of our village ourselves,’ residents engaged in various village maintenance activities, such as painting murals containing the village’s story, planting lotus flowers, growing hydrangeas, and creating parks. These activities promoted harmony between natives and immigrants, led to an increase in the number of village households, and brought new vitality to a village that was on the verge of extinction.
The success story of Yeondong Village was selected as an ‘excellent case of response to population decline’ by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2022, and the project was expanded to 22 villages in 2023 with a special grant of 500 million won as an incentive.
Based on these achievements, the ‘Jindo 242 Asteroid Project’ is contributing to overcoming the limitations of administrative-led policies and creating a better village for residents to live in. This is expected to have the effect of preventing existing indigenous people from leaving the village and helping the resettlement of people who have returned to farming or rural areas.
In 2024, the project will be further expanded and 1.4 billion won in local extinction response funds will be invested to promote the creation of unique villages in 87 villages by utilizing the tangible and intangible assets of each village.
Jindo County Governor Kim Hee-soo said, “I hope that the ‘Jindo 242 Asteroid Project,’ which presents a beautiful and safe village and a growth engine, will be a new breakthrough in overcoming regional extinction.”
Jindo-gun plans to continue to present a sustainable village development model through the Jindo-type Saemaul Movement with residents and to seek innovative alternatives to solve the problem of regional extinction.
