Health trainer Hwang Cheol-sun (40), who was sentenced to prison and detained in court on charges of beating and injuring a female acquaintance, applied for bail, but the application was not accepted.

On the 1st, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Park So-jeong) denied bail for Mr. Hwang, who was sentenced to prison in the first trial on charges of assault resulting in death and property damage on the 29th of last month.

Mr. Hwang was sentenced to one year in prison in the first trial on the 11th of last month and is currently in custody in court on charges of becoming enraged and swearing and assaulting a female acquaintance, Ms. A, several times during an argument in a building in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province on October 16th of last year.

The trial court ruled, “The defendant caused the victim to sustain injuries that required three weeks of treatment,” and “The victim must have felt considerable fear as he threw the victim’s cell phone and broke the side mirror at the same location.”

The court then stated, “He has a weak sense of law and does not have a sincere heart (a heart that repents for his wrongdoing) by criticizing the victim with things unrelated to the facts of the case,” and “He deposited 20 million won, but the victim showed intent to refuse and requested severe punishment, which were taken into consideration as reasons for the sentencing.” In the process, the court sentenced Hwang to one year in prison and detained him in the courtroom, citing the risk of him fleeing.

Mr. Hwang, dissatisfied with the first trial verdict, filed an appeal with the court immediately after the sentencing.

Mr. Hwang is reported to have kicked Mr. A in the face with his foot and grabbed and shook his hair. It is reported that Mr. A suffered injuries requiring three weeks of treatment as a result of this incident. In addition, it was investigated that Mr. Hwang damaged Mr. A’s cell phone by throwing it on the ground during an argument with Mr. A and damaged the side mirror of Mr. A’s car, among other things.

Mr. Hwang’s side argued, “I only lifted the head with the soft calf area, never kicked it, and never grabbed the hair,” but the first trial court did not accept this.
