Government is suffering huge losses
Companies like Airtel and Jio complain that platforms like WhatsApp are causing losses to both the government and telecom companies, where the government is suffering losses in terms of revenue. Jio and Airtel are suffering losses in terms of user base. In such a situation, telecom companies are expected to suffer losses because the expenses of telecom companies are increasing while the earnings are decreasing. In such a situation, if OTT apps like WhatsApp and Telegram are regulated, then they may have to pay fees to the government along with licensing. In such a situation, it is possible that free internet calling and messaging may be affected. Also, customers may have to pay charges.
Preparations underway to bring WhatsApp under the purview of law
Telecom companies want apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram to come under the purview of the law. This means that the license process should be implemented on all these platforms. For this, a complaint has been made to the government by the telecom companies. Telecom companies like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and COAI have jointly complained to the government.
New law may be implemented
These companies say that these apps also work like a telephone, so they should also be licensed. COAI said that these apps now come under the new telecom law. Reliance Jio says that the definition of ‘message’ and ‘telecom service’ given in the new law includes all types of messages running on the Internet. Therefore, these apps should also be licensed. Bharti Airtel says that in the new law, ‘telecom service’ and apps can also be brought under this law.
Airtel accused
Airtel said that when we use a normal telephone, the government can keep an eye on it. But the government does not keep an eye on these apps. This can increase crime. Airtel also said that telecom companies keep the data of customers safe, but this is not the case with these apps.
Threat from foreign apps
Most of these apps are made abroad. Therefore, it is important that rules are made on these apps as well. Airtel said that if these apps are licensed, the government will be able to keep an eye on them. This will increase the security of the country. Vodafone Idea says that these apps are growing very fast. Making rules on them will protect customers. Also, their complaints can be resolved.
