The three-week deadline given by the President of the Republic is not yet close to elapse to put an end to the load shedding that reigns in the capital and the big cities of Madagascar and now JIRAMA is still doing its own. For a few nights now, the electricity has been cut in most parts of the capital. But as surprising as it is, it lasts almost all night. As recently as Thursday, the blackout continued throughout the morning.

The Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons had declared that all means will be made available to reduce load shedding as much as possible and that the three-week deadline announced by the President of the Republic will be respected. But this is obviously not a derisory means since it involves 20 tank trucks of heavy fuel oil per day to produce electricity at thermal power stations, the production capacity of hydroelectric power stations being weakened because of the low water level.

To be able to reduce expenditure on the purchase of heavy fuel oil, the possibility of causing artificial rain was also announced by the ministry in order to supply more water to the hydroelectric power stations. But obviously, the situation is difficult for the Malagasy water and electricity company (JIRAMA). The objective of improving services and productions is becoming increasingly distant, unfortunately to the great detriment of consumers.

With a deficit, JIRAMA is a society that is unfortunately starting to die out, because of the bad management that reigns there. But the Malagasy authorities are far from convinced and have no other solution than to inject more money into it. However, the solutions seem to be numerous, according to specialists in the field who mention solar or nuclear energy among the alternatives.

During the last Russia-Africa summit, President Vladmir Putin indicated the readiness of Russian energy operators to supply up to 5.1 gigawatts of electricity to African countries. But Madagascar has not come forward even though this presents an opportunity to solve the country’s major problems.
