At the age of 77, Jiří Žák, a longtime member of the cast of Prague’s Vinohrady Theater, also a writer, translator and presenter, died this Sunday. He appeared in front of the film camera, for example, in the film I Served the King of England or Doctor from Hippo Lake.

For years, the student hosted the Sunday morning show on Czech Radio. Jana Fikotová from the Albatros publishing house, with whom the deceased worked for more than 20 years, informed about the death with reference to the family.

He was born on September 9, 1946 in Prague. He graduated from the local high school of economics, then graduated from the acting department at DAMU. In the first half of the 1980s, he worked in the theater in Mostek, and between 1985 and 1993 in the West Bohemian Theater in Cheb. Since 2003, he has been a member of the artistic ensemble of the Theater in Vinohrady.

In addition, Jiří Žák wrote many books, including the novel Já, Vincent or the mosaic of Provence stories, known and unknown. He translated over 100 works and dozens of plays from French.

“His deep knowledge of French literature and culture made him irreplaceable when translating many important works that would have remained inaccessible to Czech readers without his efforts. His translation work was always precise and sensitive, while he was able to preserve the spirit of the original and at the same time adapt it to the Czech reader,” he says Jana Fikotová.

For television, Žák filmed documentaries about France, especially about Paris and the country’s personalities, for example he is signed to a series of interviews with Jean-Paul Belmond, Jean Marais, Pierre Richard or the actress Annie Girardot. On Czech television, he was the author of scripts for documentary programs and films French interview, Europeans or Postcards from Montmartre. He also became a guide to the series of historical documents about Czechoslovak aviation Give us wings.
