Jismon Mathew: A Keralite Rising to Chief Arbiter in International Chess Competition

Pala: A Keralite as Chief Observer and Controller in International Chess Competitions. Jismon Mathew, a teacher at Melukavmattam Kannamkulam, has reached this position. Gismon Mathew has been appointed as the Chief Arbiter of the International Master Closed Circuit Chess Tournament currently being held in Chennai.

The tournament features Grandmasters, International Masters and Women’s International Masters from five countries. Qualifying to officiate matches is by obtaining the position of International Arbiter.

Jismon got the position two years ago. The chief arbiter has the final say in international chess matches. The Chief Arbiter will announce the winners and issue certificates. Jismon is a mathematics teacher at St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Munnilav Valiyakumaramangalam.

Decades of hard work

In 2012, Gismon earned the title of arbitrator to officiate state competitions. Step by step he rose and gained recognition for managing national competitions. Later he became an arbiter for international competitions and now he is the chief arbiter. Irumapramattam MD CMS Gismon entered the world of chess by chance when he was in the 10th grade of high school.

MG University has won the first position in the individual competition for three consecutive years. Aspiring to become a chess champion, Gizmon began refereeing matches from the 1998 MG University South Zone Championship.

Another turning point was attending a seminar by Tamil native Rathinam Anantharam, one of the best arbiters in the world. Seeing Gizmon’s abilities, Antaram got the courage to write the ‘Fiday Arbiter’ test conducted directly by the World Chess Federation. Attended FIDE Arbitrator Seminar held in Chennai 12 years back and passed the test with 2nd rank. His wife Ginumol is a teacher in St. Thomas High School, Pannadu. Son: Olivio.
