Acting President of Temple University Dies at Memorial Service

JoAnne A. Epps, the acting president of Temple University in Philadelphia, passed away on Tuesday after falling ill during a memorial service, according to the university. Ms. Epps, who was appointed in April, was immediately taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead at around 3:15 p.m. at the age of 72.

In a statement, the university expressed its deep sadness and loss, describing President Epps as a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple. The university did not disclose the cause of death.

The memorial service that Ms. Epps was attending was dedicated to Charles L. Blockson, a historian, author, and curator of the Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple, who passed away in June at the age of 89. During the service, Ms. Epps appeared to slump in her chair and fell ill, prompting concern from those around her. The live feed of the service was briefly interrupted before resuming.

Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania took to social media to express his condolences. He described Ms. Epps as a powerful force and constant ambassador for Temple University, and her loss as heartbreaking for Philadelphia.

Mitchell L. Morgan, the chair of the Temple board of trustees, referred to Ms. Epps as the university’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Ms. Epps had been a member of Temple’s faculty for over 30 years and had previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Philadelphia and a deputy city attorney in Los Angeles.

Her sudden death adds to the challenges already facing the university, following the resignation of the previous president, Jason Wingard, in March. Temple University has experienced worsening crime around the campus, a graduate student strike, and a loss of confidence in leadership among some faculty members.

Ms. Epps had been seen as a leader who could bring stability to the university. Despite her temporary appointment, she was determined to address campus safety and falling enrollment, issues that many universities are currently grappling with.

The Temple Association of University Professionals expressed their deep sadness at the loss of a “true Temple icon,” highlighting Ms. Epps’ significant contributions to the university. The student government association also recognized her dedication to students’ needs and wants.

Temple University, alongside its students, faculty, and surrounding community, mourns the untimely passing of JoAnne A. Epps, a highly respected and valuable member of the university family.
