Joe Biden makes gaffe and confuses New Zealand rugby team with British military group

US President Joe Biden committed a gaffe during a visit to Ireland on Thursday (13).

The American leader’s family originates from the European country and Biden was making a comment about a distant cousin who played on the Irish rugby team and won a match against the New Zealand team when he made a mess.

The New Zealand team is named All Blacks, but was called by Biden Black and Tans, the name of a British military group known for violence in the repression of movements for Irish independence.

“Do you see this tie I have with this shamrock on it? It was given to me by one of these guys here. He was a great rugby player and he beat up the Black and Tans.”

The White House released the transcript of the president’s speech on the official page and the excerpt in which Biden changes names appears corrected.

The US president landed in Ireland on Tuesday (11) to participate in celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement, signed by the British and Irish governments to end the 30-year conflict.
