The President of the United States, Joe Bidensaid on Wednesday (30) that no one can deny that the world is facing a climate crisis, after Hurricane Idalia hit the Big Bend region of Florida and forced millions of residents to evacuate the region.

“I don’t think anyone can deny the impact of the climate crisis anymore,” Biden told reporters at the White House. “Just look around. Historic flooding. I mean historic flooding. More intense droughts, extreme heat and significant wildfires have caused significant damage.”

Biden has made tackling climate change a key goal of his presidency, setting a goal of halving US emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels and enacting hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits to promote electric vehicles.

Some Republican lawmakers, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, continue to oppose a raft of measures aimed at reducing emissions.

DeSantis signed a sweeping bill in May that prohibits state officials from investing public money to further environmental, social and governance goals, as well as preventing the sale of ESG securities.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called “the climate agenda” a “farce” during last week’s Republican debate.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell on Wednesday declined to blame climate change for the storm, but said her agency was seeing a sharp increase in the number of severe weather events.
