embiid Returns to 76ers Lineup After Nine-Game Absence Due to Knee Soreness
The Philadelphia 76ers welcomed back star center Joel Embiid to the starting lineup on Sunday against the Atlanta Hawks, ending a nine-game stretch where his absence due to a sore right knee significantly impacted the team’s performance.
Embiid’s return comes as a major boost for a 76ers team that has struggled to maintain consistency without their 2023 NBA MVP. Prior to Sunday’s game, the team had played only six games with embiid in the lineup out of a possible 20, during which he averaged 19.7 points and 5.5 rebounds. the 76ers’ record reflects this disparity, standing at 4-2 with Embiid and hovering around a .500 average without him.
The team cautiously upgraded Embiid’s status to “questionable” on the injury report Sunday afternoon, ultimately clearing him to play following a prosperous pregame workout. This careful approach underscores the ongoing management of his health, especially in light of his extensive injury history.
Notably, Sunday’s contest marked the first time this season the 76ers were able to field their anticipated All-Star trio of Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey in the starting lineup. This presents a formidable challenge for opponents and raises the 76ers’ ceiling for the remainder of the season.
Embiid’s last appearance was in a win over the Toronto Raptors on November 8th. he was held out of the subsequent game against the Detroit pistons due to restrictions on playing consecutive games following April surgery on his left knee. While the initial issue stemmed from his left knee, the 76ers confirmed that right knee soreness kept him sidelined until Sunday.
“I think they’re just trying to get it to where he feels good enough to play,” a team spokesperson stated prior to the game, highlighting the priority of managing Embiid’s well-being.
The timing of Embiid’s return is crucial, as the 76ers face a demanding schedule of four games within the next seven days against the Washington Wizards, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers. His presence will be vital in navigating this challenging stretch.
Embiid’s injury history is well-documented.Last season, the 31-year-old was limited to just 19 games and underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April. That season was also marred by a sprained left foot and a sinus fracture, ultimately leading to him being ruled out for the remainder of the year after averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
Even before entering the NBA, Embiid battled setbacks, including a stress fracture in his right foot that cost him two years of development. Since then, he has endured a litany of injuries – bone bruises, meniscus tears, orbital bone fractures, sprained shoulders, tendinitis, torn ligaments, and even Bell’s palsy – demonstrating remarkable resilience.
Despite these persistent health concerns, the 76ers demonstrated their commitment to Embiid by signing him to a three-year, $193 million contract extension in 2024, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 seaso
