‘John’ makes landfall in Aquila, Michoacán; heavy rain

This noon the tropical storm ‘John’ made landfall againnow in the surroundings of AquilaMichoacan.

The National Meteorological Service warned that John maintains variable behavior and moves slowly, so extreme caution is recommended in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

At 12:15 p.m. this Friday, September 27, the tropical storm was located 26 kilometers east of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, and 140 kilometers southeast of Manzanillo, Colima, moving towards the north-northwest at 6 kilometers per hour (km/h). It has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and gusts of 95 km/h.

The waves will be two to four meters high and possible formation of waterspouts on the coasts of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco; and gusts of 50 to 70 km/h in Nayarit, and with waves of 1 to 3 meters high on the coast of Oaxaca.

The prevention zone for the effects of a tropical storm remains in force from Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, to Manzanillo, Colima.

The release of the ‘El Caracol’ dam will increase 5 times; would raise the level of ‘Balsas’

The level of the Balsas River could become critical, since the National Water Commission (Conagua) decided to increase the amount of water to be released from the El Caracol dam by up to five times.

Consequently, the La Villita and Infiernillo dams in Michoacán will raise their level in the coming hours.

The initial cut was an estimated up to 400 cubic meters per second, however, the intense rains experienced by the hurricane caused the authorities to take more drastic measures.

The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection reported on its social networks, and confirmed the National Water Commission, that a release of up to 2,500 cubic meters per second will be carried out.

“This morning the controlled release of the El Caracol dam increased, by emitting discharges of 2,500 cubic meters per second, which could increase the bed of the Balsas River,” the message states.

The government of the state of Guerrero called on the population that lives near the bed of the Balsas River to take extreme precautionary measures.

In the case of Michoacán, the authorities in the matter chose to begin maneuvers to relieve the Infiernillo and La Villita dams, extracting up to five thousand 500 cubic meters from the reservoirs to control both bodies of water.

With less than 500 cubic meters, in the entity, damage was confirmed in towns such as Santa Rita, San Jerónimo and Tziritzícuaro, in Huetamo; Also 40 people were protected in the limits of San Lucas, with Pungarabato, in Guerrero; and in Churumuco they were cut off from Huetamo.

In the case of Guerrero, there are damages in Zirándaro, where two workers of Chinese origin were swept away by the current, and flooding in Coyuca, Tlapehuala, Pungarabato, Placeres del Oro and San Miguel Totolapan.
