John Stamos, the actor known for his role as Uncle Jesse in the hit sitcom “Full House,” recently opened up about his initial dislike for the show. In an episode of “Hot Ones,” Stamos revealed that his young co-star Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie, stole the show during a table read, causing him to resent the show at first.

“We did a table read of it, and I was the star. I was coming off of ‘General Hospital,’ and all the mothers were like (gestures fawning over him),” Stamos recalled. “We start reading, and Jodie Sweetin reads her lines, and people are dying laughing, I mean screaming. I was like, ‘What’s happening here?'”

Stamos had initially believed that “Full House” would be a sitcom with a greater focus on his character, similar to shows like “Bosom Buddies.” However, as the casting process began, Stamos realized that the show was shaping up to be something different.

“As we’re casting it, I was like, ‘They’re spending a lot of time casting these kids that are going to be in the background,'” Stamos chuckled.

During the table read, Stamos grew even more concerned as Sweetin’s character outshined his own. “I was slinking into my chair, you couldn’t even hear my lines, they were laughing so hard at her,” he admitted.

In frustration, Stamos immediately called his agent and demanded to be taken off the show. “I fought it for a long time,” he said regretfully. “And then I finally said, ‘What am I doing, it’s a beautiful show.’ We built it with sweetness and kindness.”

This was not the only instance where Stamos encountered difficulties with his co-stars. He once attempted to replace the Olsen twins, who played Michelle Tanner, when they were just 11 months old. The decision came after shooting a scene where Stamos’ character tries to take care of the twins while their father is away.

“We’re carrying the baby downstairs, and we take her in the kitchen and we hose her down. And she was screaming. Both of them. They wanted to be anywhere else but there — and so did I,” Stamos recalled on the “Good Guys Podcast.”

After a brief period with two replacements, Stamos realized his mistake and insisted on bringing back the Olsen twins, saying, “Bring the Olsens back! These kids are terrible.”

Despite his initial reservations, Stamos eventually came to appreciate the ensemble cast of “Full House” and even produced and acted in the spinoff, “Fuller House.” According to Stamos, the show was not centered around any particular character but instead represented the best example of a loving and unconventional family.

In conclusion, John Stamos’ candid revelations provide a fascinating insight into his journey from disliking “Full House” to embracing the show’s ensemble cast and the lasting impact it had on television.
