Table of Contents
A collection of rare soccer memorabilia owned by former Chelsea captain John Terry recently sold for just over $695,000 through American auction house Goldin Auctions, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting disadvantaged youth in the United Kingdom. The auction featured iconic jerseys and trophies from some of the biggest names in the sport, attracting significant interest from collectors worldwide.
Record-Breaking Sales of Messi & Ronaldo Jerseys
Among the most sought-after items were match-worn jerseys from soccer superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. A jersey worn by Messi during a 2006 Champions League match between Chelsea and Barcelona ultimately sold for $183,000. Even more impressively, a signed jersey worn by Ronaldo during a 2008 Premier League match against Manchester United fetched $115,900 – a new record price for a Ronaldo jersey.
Historic Jerseys from Arsenal & Juventus Legends
The auction wasn’t limited to contemporary stars. Match-worn and signed jerseys from Thierry Henry and Gianluigi Buffon also commanded high prices. Henry’s jersey, from Arsenal’s famed “Invincibles Season” in 2003, sold for $98,820, while Buffon’s gold jersey from a 2009 Champions League match against Chelsea went for $22,265. These sales represent the highest prices ever paid for jerseys worn by Henry and Buffon, respectively.
A Treasure Trove of Soccer History
Beyond these headline pieces, the auction included a vast array of items from Terry’s personal collection. Jerseys worn by other legendary players – including Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paolo Maldini, Cesc Fabregas, and many more – were also available. A 2007 replica FA Cup champions trophy presented to Terry proved to be a popular item, selling for $26,840.
The auction also featured Terry’s own playing memorabilia, including captain’s armbands from his time with England, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, as well as match-worn cleats and shin guards.
Supporting the John Terry Foundation
A significant aspect of the auction was its charitable component. An unspecified portion of the proceeds will be donated to the John Terry Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth in the United Kingdom. This philanthropic element added another layer of appeal to the auction, attracting bidders who were eager to contribute to a worthy cause.
