The iconic disco dress worn by John Travolta in the cult film ‘Saturday Night Fever’ (1977) goes up for auction. The actor’s costume – the white jacket, waistcoat and bell bottoms and black shirt – will go on sale with a starting estimate of $200,000 in Beverly Hills, Calif., by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies during the event of 22 and 23 April entitled “Hollywood: Classic & Contemporary. Among the numerous props related to the world of cinema, the same auction will also offer the machete wielded by Harrison Ford in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, a helmet from ‘Captain America’ and a hoverboard used by Michael J. Fox in ‘Back to the Future’.

“Considered one of the most iconic costumes in cinematic history, the suit worn by Travolta is one of only two that are known to exist and were used during production, including in the film’s memorable dance sequences. This specific dress from ‘Saturday Night Fever’ has never been exhibited or auctioned,” assures Julien’s Auctions in a statement.

Travolta wore the dress for the film’s famous dance-contest scene in which he performs to the tune of the Bee Gees’ ‘More Than A Woman’, alongside his partner Karen Lynn Gorney. The performance earned Travolta a Best Actor nomination at the 1978 Academy Awards.

John Travolta’s costume is one of approximately 1400 lots offered in this auction, from famous films from the last 100 years. Other items of great interest are Charlie Chaplin’s walking stick and the original wig worn by Theda Bara in the 1917 film “Cleopatra”. Harry Potter fans will also be able to bid on various props and wands from the saga. Also up for auction are costumes from the Batman and Star Wars sagas.
