The iconic Bel Air home of late-night television giant Johnny Carson has officially been put up for sale, asking a cool $40 million. The sprawling estate, a testament to Carson’s decades of success, offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of entertainment history.
A Look Inside the Legendary Property
Built in 1950, the residence spans 9,052 square feet and sits on a lush 1.5-acre property. The home boasts six bedrooms and eleven bathrooms, providing ample space for luxurious living and entertaining. Beyond the main house, a detached two-story guest house offers additional privacy and accommodation.
Inside, guests will find a library, perfect for quiet contemplation, a well-stocked wine cellar for the connoisseur, and a dedicated home office. The property also features two large garages, a gourmet kitchen equipped for any culinary endeavor, and a spacious primary bedroom complete with walk-in closets and two ensuite bathrooms.

A Legacy Remembered
The listing comes as a new biography, “Love Johnny Carson,” written by Carson superfan Mark Malkoff with David Ritz, sheds light on the life and career of the beloved talk show host. The book explores Carson’s impact on television and his sometimes-fraught relationship with “Saturday Night Live.”
According to the book, Carson was particularly bothered by the frequent parodies of him on “SNL.” Malkoff recounts an incident in May 1991, where Carson reportedly said, “If they are going to make fun of me, it’s time to go,” after learning of another planned sketch. Shortly after, “SNL” aired the infamous “Carsenio” sketch, and Carson announced his departure two days later, with his final show airing on May 22, 1992.
In his farewell, Carson reflected on his remarkable career, stating, “I am one of the lucky people in the world” and expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to share his show with viewers for three decades. He also acknowledged his longtime colleagues, Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen, with heartfelt appreciation.
