Johnson & Johnson is facing lawsuits from thousands of women alleging that asbestos in the company’s talcum powder caused them to develop ovarian cancer.
As part of the global evaluation, we have taken a commercial decision to switch to a completely corn based powder for children, the company said in a statement.
The company also said that cornmeal-based baby powder is being sold in many countries around the world.
Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson has reiterated that its children’s powder is safe for use.
Two years ago, Johnson & Johnson stopped selling children’s talcum powder in the United States and Canada.
Talcum powder is made from the mineral talc extracted from the earth. It contains asbestos in its natural form which can cause cancer.
Company documents, trial testimony, and other evidence show that from fifty years ago to 22 years ago, Johnson & Johnson’s talc raw material and finished powders were sometimes confirmed to contain trace amounts of asbestos.
The company continued to deny the allegations to courts, media reports, and U.S. attorneys in response to evidence of asbestos contamination.
