With the year about to end, Jolyon Palmer has taken stock of 2023 in Formula 1. In addition to recognizing the excellent season of Max Verstappen, who had no competition and achieved 19 victories out of a possible 22, the former driver and commentator has praised the Spaniards, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz.

For Palmer, the best individual performance of the year was carried out by the Spanish Ferrari driver, more specifically with his exhibition in Singapore, where he took the only victory that Red Bull did not achieve in the season.

“Sainz deserves to be highlighted in this section for what he did in Singapore. It was the only race in which Red Bull was not in the fight for victory and everything was open to see who would take the spoils. Two Ferraris, two Mercedes and Lando Norris engaged in a fierce fight, but Sainz bagged the victory with a perfect strategy. He served as a brilliant example of an analytical pilot who knows how to calculate,” he stated.

Furthermore, he acknowledged that “the Singapore finish was one of the best I can remember, perhaps the best of all time, with four cars fighting tooth and nail on a complicated street circuit.”

Regarding Fernando Alonso, Palmer has spoken of him as the big surprise of the season. “This was another great feel-good story from 2023. Who could have imagined Alonso riding at the front, with such regularity, for the first time in 10 years? It was a brilliant achievement for Aston Martin to present such a weapon in Bahrain. Alonso’s driving style also suited the strong traction car and Fernando showed that he is still at his best, even at 42 years old,”

“The only thing missing from this fairytale comeback was that elusive 33rd victory, and the truth is that Alonso came very close to achieving it. That the team suffered a slump could be a cause for concern, but if they can have it again a strong winter, a victory for Fernando could be possible in 2024,” stated Palmer.
