Jon Favreau to Direct New Star Wars Movie Featuring Baby Yoda
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has announced that The Mandalorian director Jon Favreau has been selected to helm a new Star Wars movie, featuring the beloved character Baby Yoda, also known as Grogu.
Favreau expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
The plot of the upcoming film remains a secret, but Kennedy has described it as “a perfect fit for the big screen.”
Since its debut on the Disney+ streaming service, The Mandalorian, with its lead character played by Pedro Pascal, has gained immense popularity and acclaim. The series has garnered critical praise and was nominated for best drama series at the Emmys. A fourth season is also in the works.
In addition to directing the series, Favreau is known for his work on Iron Man and The Lion King.
This announcement comes as part of Disney’s decision to focus more on exploring the Star Wars universe on the big screen. The project marks one of several new Star Wars films in development, with directors such as Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Donald Glover, and Taika Waititi attached to various projects.
Obaid-Chinoy is set to become the first woman and first person of color to direct a Star Wars film, with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey in the upcoming production.
Lucasfilm has also announced and then canceled a range of Star Wars projects in recent years, leaving fans eagerly waiting for the next installment in the iconic franchise.
The last Star Wars film, 2019’s Rise of the Skywalker, received mixed reviews but still made over $1 billion worldwide.
