49ers’ Jon Feliciano to make first start at left guard against Jaguars

SANTA CLARA — Jon Feliciano knew what he was getting into when he signed with the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason. The veteran offensive lineman knew there was a possibility he would return to a backup role, but he also knew he would get his chances to contribute as the top backup at center and both guard positions.

However, Feliciano will be getting more than just chances to contribute as he is set to make his first start with the 49ers on Sunday in Jacksonville. Left guard Aaron Banks is expected to be sidelined for multiple games with a hyperextended toe, opening the door for Feliciano to step in.

After being primarily a backup in his first four NFL seasons with the Raiders, Feliciano started 46 games over the next four seasons with the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants. Despite knowing he might have to take on a backup role with the 49ers, Feliciano believed he had a chance to win a job and the coaching staff seems to agree.

“He’s got his opportunity, but we’ve been real happy with Jon,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday. “We were going to start playing him a little bit just to get him in there regardless because of how consistent he has been.”

Feliciano also expressed his excitement for fitting into Shanahan’s offensive system, stating that he had been a fan of the 49ers’ scheme when watching film in past seasons. The 31-year-old offensive lineman believes he could be a good fit in the offense, and the 49ers are counting on him as they head to Jacksonville on a three-game losing streak.

Feliciano will be starting at left guard, and there is uncertainty whether Trent Williams or Jaylon Moore will line up at left tackle. Williams is currently questionable with an ankle injury, but Feliciano is confident with his familiarity with both players.

With the 49ers looking to place an emphasis on getting their run game going, the offensive line will play a crucial role in their game plan. And Feliciano is ready to seize the opportunity and contribute to the 49ers’ efforts to turn their season around.
