American middle-distance runner and 2025 U.S. 1,500-meter champion Jonah Koech has been suspended for three years and stripped of his national title after abnormal blood values in his athlete biological passport revealed evidence of blood doping, according to announcements by anti-doping authorities.
The sanction, announced by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, brings an abrupt halt to the 29-year-old athlete’s competitive career through July 17, 2029, effectively keeping him out of contention for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Koech accepted the suspension under a provision that reduces a potential four-year ban by one year after he admitted to the violation within 20 days of receiving notice.
How the Athlete Biological Passport Flagged the Violation
The case against Koech did not rely on a conventional positive test for a specific prohibited substance. Instead, investigators flagged highly atypical blood values in his athlete biological passport, a monitoring tool that tracks an athlete’s blood biomarkers over time to spot deviations that natural processes cannot explain.
According to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, passport monitoring has been utilized since 2009 to detect methods such as blood transfusions and erythropoietin, commonly known as EPO. Testers collected samples from Koech on July 30, 2025, and August 8, 2025. Those samples demonstrated values consistent with blood doping, a finding confirmed through unanimous expert evaluations of his blood profile.
Travis Tygart, CEO of USADA, stated that this case is proof that the Athlete Biological Passport can both deter and detect doping, and added that to ensure a fair playing field, every anti-doping organization needs this tool and the resources to use it effectively.
Following the initial flagged results, additional samples were gathered to build a more robust data profile before the formal Adverse Passport Finding was reported in February 2026.
Titles, Prize Money, and Championship Results Vacated
The penalty carries sweeping retroactive consequences for Koech’s results. Under the terms of the sanction, all results, competitive records, and prize money earned on and after July 30, 2025, are disqualified.
That timeline strips Koech of his victory at the U.S. Outdoor Championships, where he stunned the field by clocking a meet record of 3 minutes, 30.17 seconds. At the time, Koech told reporters he was running at only 75 percent health due to a hamstring issue. The disqualification also erases his 13th-place finish in the 1,500-meter final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later that summer.
Shifting Podiums and National Standings
The recalculation of the 2025 national championship alters the domestic podium. Ethan Strand, who originally finished second in 3:30.25, inherits the U.S. national championship. Cole Hocker, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist who crossed the finish line third in 3:30.37, moves up to second place.
Hobbs Kessler, who initially finished fourth in 3:31.12 and missed a direct spot on the world championship team, moves up to third on the national podium. The fallout reshapes the historical record of a breakout season that saw Koech transition from primarily an 800-meter specialist into a domestic miler.

Born in Kenya, Koech moved to the United States for college, competing for UTEP and Texas Tech between 2015 and 2019. He became eligible to represent the United States in June 2021 and subsequently joined the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program.
His ascent in the 1500 meters gained momentum in May 2025 at the Rabat Diamond League, where he slashed nearly six seconds off his personal best to win in 3:31.43, improving upon a previous best of 3:37.27 set in 2024. That trajectory culminated in his national title before the biological passport review halted his career.
