Iraq, 3rd place, behind in gains and losses
The Korean men’s national soccer team, led by coach Hong Myung-bo, is leading Group B of the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup Asian region third qualifying round, followed by Jordan and Iraq.
As of the 16th, Group B of the 3rd preliminary round in Asia has progressed to the 4th game.
The third qualifying round, in which 6 of the 8.5 World Cup finals allotted to Asia are at stake, will be played with a total of 10 home and away games, with the first and second place winners from Groups A to C advancing directly to the World Cup finals.
The 3rd and 4th place players advance to the 4th preliminary round, and the rest are eliminated.
Korea crossed the 5th division ridge by successively defeating Iraq (55th) and Jordan (68th), which have high FIFA rankings, in Group B until the fourth game.
Following a 2-0 win over Jordan on the 10th, the team won 3-2 against Iraq at Yongin Mir Stadium on the 15th. They solidified their lead in the group with 3 wins and 1 draw.
Behind Hong Myung-Boho are Jordan and Iraq (2 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss, 7 points).
Jordan, who lost 0-2 to Korea in the third game, won 4-0 in the fourth home game against Oman that day.
Accordingly, although they had the same number of points as Iraq, they were significantly ahead in goal difference and ranked second.
Behind Iraq are Oman and Kuwait (with 3 points).
Kuwait ended in a 2-2 draw with Palestine that day.
As of the end of the 4th game, Oman has 1 win and 3 losses, while Kuwait has 3 draws and 1 loss. Oman is also ranked one level higher than Kuwait in terms of gain and loss.
Palestine, the lowest ranked team, has 2 draws and 2 losses (2 points) and has yet to report its first win in this preliminary round along with Kuwait.
Meanwhile, Hong Myung-boho will play the 5th and 6th games in Kuwait and Palestine on the 14th and 19th of next month, respectively.
If they continue their winning streak until the second consecutive game in the Middle East, Korea’s goal of advancing to the World Cup finals for the 11th consecutive time will likely surpass the 7th division.
