This week, the Jordanian government passed a bill for parliament’s approval that amends the agreement the government has with the “International Airport Group” regarding the restoration, expansion and operation of Queen Alia Airport, the main airport in the kingdom. The government wants to extend the concession given to the airport group for another 30 years. The agreement was originally signed in 2007 and has undergone several amendments since then, but now it is a significant change.

Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al Hasawana, who introduced the law, claimed that the agreement to operate the airport is an important success for cooperation between the government and private sectors. He emphasized that the extension of the agreement for another 30 years is necessary to ensure the investment environment in the Kingdom.

However, not all members of the Jordanian parliament expressed support for the law during yesterday’s debate. For example, the member of parliament Saleh al-Armouti claimed that this law “sads” him since Jordan is giving up one of its most important assets. According to him, 83% of the group that operates the airport is foreign owned. Another member of parliament, Dr. Muhammad Al Akhor, also stated that he would oppose the agreement since it constitutes an infringement of Jordan’s sovereignty.
