Jordanian Foreign Minister and Iranian Counterpart Discuss Drug Smuggling Threat

In a recent phone call, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safdi and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdullahian discussed the growing threat of drug smuggling across the Syrian border into Jordan. The two diplomats emphasized the need for continued dialogue and cooperation on all problematic issues related to this threat, according to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

The discussion comes in the wake of Jordan’s recent announcement that it had thwarted a new attempt to smuggle a shipment of drugs from Syria. The Jordanian army, in coordination with the drug control department and the military security services, successfully intercepted an attempt by smugglers to illegally cross the border. The operation resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of drugs and ammunition.

This interception is not an isolated incident, as the Jordanian army recently engaged in a 14-hour battle with drug smugglers attempting to force their way across the border. The clashes led to the killing and arrest of several smugglers, as well as the seizure of large quantities of drugs and weapons.

In response to these escalating efforts, the Jordanian Air Force launched airstrikes on sites in southern Syria, suspected to be hiding places for drug smugglers supported by Iran, according to regional intelligence sources.

The Jordanian government views drug smuggling across the Syrian border as a grave threat to its national security and has vowed to take all necessary measures to defeat it. The ongoing dialogue and cooperation between Jordan and Iran on this issue signify a commitment to addressing this pressing concern.
