Watan Al-Youm: Deputy Head of the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, Brigadier General Hatem Al-Zoubi, said on Thursday that it is not accurate to know that an earthquake will occur by day and hour.
Al-Zoubi added, “If the issue were this simple, there would not be all these losses in the countries and regions where these disasters occurred.”
He added that earthquakes are a series of events whose behavior is difficult to predict, and the places and times of their occurrence are difficult to predict.
Al-Zoubi pointed out that there is a scientific development that perhaps some countries, such as Japan, can give an early warning of up to a limited and simple few seconds through which they can stop activity in the atomic reactors and perhaps stop some trains. This is the maximum that has been achieved.
He stressed that “Jordan’s geographical location is not vulnerable to tropical cyclones, and our walls are safe and all of them are monitored with early warning means, and they are constantly inspected.”
He continued: “Every dam has a response plan, and we communicate with those living near the dam spillways on a regular basis.”
“I am surprised by the idea of setting a date for an earthquake. In fact, I am surprised by this information and rumors on our social media sites, which have spoken a lot that we have an earthquake, or an earthquake will occur, or an earthquake has occurred.” According to Al-Zoubi
Speaking about the Safety Path exercise, he said that it came within the framework of a training plan for the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, which is “Safety Trail 3.” This means that there are 1 and 2, and there are also exercises that came months ago that are related to this topic and may not have been announced.
He continued: “We are preparing plans for these risks, and among these risks are earthquakes. There is a national plan to confront earthquakes that was approved by the Prime Minister. By the way, the plan occurred in 2017 and was amended in 2019. After the earthquake happened in Turkey and Syria, the plan was reconsidered in detail and we entered into in-depth details.” We benefited from the experiences of others in order to reach the greatest possible realism in our plans.”
He continued: “Now it is necessary to test these plans. You test the plans in two ways, either with real facts or with exercises. Therefore, the scenario for the Safety Path 3 exercise was prepared last June, meaning before the Moroccan earthquake, and it was postponed to the month of 9 to coincide with the return of schools, because schools are part of the “The series on which we will apply such an exercise, the idea is simply to find the weaknesses and gaps in our plan for this topic.”
He pointed out that Safety Trail 3 does not mean an earthquake will occur, and it will be followed by Safety Trail 4 and Safety Trail 5.
He stressed that the duty is to provide training and there is no objection to training.
“If we do not have indicators of an earthquake, this does not excuse me and state institutions from training and reaching a high level of competence in not preventing the earthquake, but responding to its repercussions if it occurs,” according to Al-Zoubi.
