In recent years, the journalist Jordi Évole has managed to interview prominent public figures who have made headlines and front pages in the media. Many of his programs that have been broadcast on television have generated great controversy and debate, either because of the profile of the interviewee, or because of what his guests have expressed. As this newspaper has been able to learn, the Catalan communicator would have filmed a new work on the figure of the former head of ETA Josu Urrutikoetxea, ‘Josu Ternera’, interlocutor of the organization in the Geneva and Oslo talks, which accelerated the end of the violence. ‘Veal’ resides in France, is on probation, pending trial in Spain for the murder of eleven people in the Civil Guard barracks in Zaragoza. This latest work will be released at the next edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, to be held from September 22 to 30.
Since the San Sebastián event, they have refused to make statements in this regard, but according to reliable sources consulted by this medium, in the coming days a private showing will be organized so that the members of the San Sebastian Film Festival Board of Directors can see this document before its projection to the public. This body is made up of institutional representatives of the San Sebastián City Council, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, the Basque Government and the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA).
The fact that the members of the council have the opportunity to see some of the films that are later presented at the festival is not something unusual, it is a deference that is usually offered to them from the direction of Zinemaldia. It has recently been done with the film ‘Maixabel’, by director Iciar Bollain, or with Woody Allen’s latest project, ‘Rifkin’s Festival’, which was presented in 2020.
In both cases, the presence of these titles at the festival had aroused great expectation and controversy before its premiere. And the same could happen with the film about ‘Josu Ternera’.

In February 2020, the interview he conducted with the then ERC president, Oriol Junqueras, was broadcast from prison, in what was the premiere of his interview series ‘Lo de Évole’, which has completed four seasons. Urrutikoetxea, who will turn 73 in December, resides in France, the country where he was arrested in 2019 in the Alpine town of Sallanches and later released. ‘Veal’ had been on the run for 17 years with an unknown whereabouts. To this day, he is still pending trial in Spain for the attack on the Zaragoza Civil Guard barracks on December 14, 1987, in which eleven people died, six of them minors, for which the Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court requests 2,354 years in prison. Last week it was confirmed that the Court is postponing his prosecution until his situation is clarified with the French Justice, which has decided to re-investigate the case against him for leading ETA between 2002 and 2005.
Urrutikoetxea participated in the negotiations opened in Geneva and Oslo with Jesús Eguiguren to bring about an end to ETA’s violence.
