The new season started with the revolution that led to the cancellation of ‘Sálvame’ on Telecinco. The networks then went after their audience, a faithful viewer who followed the format presented by Jorge Javier Vázquez in the last fourteen years for four hours a day – in some stages it lasted up to five hours. For the first time, five similar programs in the afternoon slot will compete with each other to win over the audience that demands current affairs and live entertainment.

The classic afternoon show has resurfaced with intensity. All TV shows talk about the same thing, but each one tries to provide a different touch through exclusive interviews, shocking news or interventions, some more controversial than others, from their star collaborators.

La 1 de TVE now enters this particular battle with ‘La plaza’, a new space that marks the return of live broadcasting to the afternoons of public television after the cancellation of ‘España direct’. On this occasion, the channel trusts in the popular Catalan presenter Jordi González, in charge of ‘Blood Ties’ in the last season, as master of ceremonies for a talk show on current events that will feature exclusively women.

RTVE highlights that the program “will offer different points of view on the topics that matter most: most significant news, society, education or interpersonal relationships.” It will be a bet produced entirely by the corporation’s professionals, which will be broadcast from the legendary studio 1 of Prado del Rey. «The new magazine aims to be a window open in the afternoons that seeks to entertain, accompany, excite and, why not, debate; but always with a smile,” they explain from the chain.

For the premiere this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., TVE’s new bet has kept an ace up its sleeve: the first interview with Terelu Campos on a television set after the death of her mother, María Teresa Campos. This moment will not be coincidental, because the one who was also the presenter of ‘Sálvame’ in its last stage joins as a collaborator of ‘La plaza’. The woman from Malaga will also participate in ‘Mañaneros’, the morning show hosted by Jaime Cantizano in the mornings of La 1, and will soon present the tribute that is being prepared for her mother on the public channel’s ‘prime time’.

Along with Terelu Campos there will be other well-known names, such as the presenters Mariló Montero and Juncal Rivero; the star Norma Duval; the model Judit Mascó; the influencer Inés Hernand; the former PP politician Celia Villalobos; the actresses Mar Saura and Mabel Lozano; the artist representative Susana Uribarri; and the journalists Marta Robles, Samanta Villar, Cristina Fernández, Silvia Tarragona, Ana Bernal-Triviño and Marta Nebot, among others.

In the midst of this women’s gathering, Jordi González will also receive guests from music, cinema, literature, social Time.news or journalism. In addition, ‘La plaza’ will feature Vicco as the voice of the program’s tune.

Thematic evenings

With ‘La Plaza’, La 1 will complete the renewal of its afternoon slot after the consolidation of the hits ‘La Promesa’, ‘El Hunter’ and ‘Aqui La Tierra’. On Thursday afternoon the new daily series, ‘La Moderna Tea Room’, will premiere. The public channel has been one of the great beneficiaries after Mediaset’s changes with the cancellation of ‘Sálvame’ and the transfer of Ana Rosa Quintana.

Thus, Jordi González will launch his particular show at the same time that the other channels offer similar content, with current affairs, heart and many latest news. In La Sexta, Iñaki López and Cristina Pardo host ‘Better Late’; Verónica Dulanto, Fernando de la Guardia and Mónica Sanz do the same with ‘Cuatro al día’; and Sonsoles Ónega leads his own program on Antena 3. Only La 2, as a generalist network, will broadcast alternative content for viewers who want to disconnect from the frenetic, and sometimes tedious, current news.

It will, however, be an interesting battle to find out the winner of the battle for the reign of the afternoons. Experts in television audiences assure that whoever wins the afternoon slot has a good chance of conquering first position in the monthly classification. At the moment, ‘La Prome’, Sonsoles Ónega and ‘Pasapalabra’ are crowned leaders in their time slots, waiting for the arrival of Jordi González to La 1 and the evolution of ‘TardeAR’ on Telecinco.
