Former Vice President Jorge Glas is seeking to be released from the maximum security prison La Roca through a writ of habeas corpus.

Jorge Glas, former vice president of the Republic and leader of Correísmo, already has a date for the reinstatement of the habeas corpus hearing in his favor.

The hearing was suspended last Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the request of Jorge Glas himself.

Habeas corpus is the right of a detained or imprisoned citizen to appear immediately and publicly before a judge or court so that, after hearing him, he may decide whether his arrest was legal or not, and whether it should be lifted or maintained.

Jorge Glas was arrested on April 5, following a police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito.

The former vice president had a preventive detention order for the Manabí Reconstruction case and was transferred to the maximum security prison La Roca.

Previously, the former vice president was sentenced to six years in prison for criminal association in the Odebrecht case.

In addition, he was sentenced to eight years in the Bribery case. The two sentences were combined.

Date to re-examine habeas corpus appeal for Jorge Glas

In his last attempt, out of a total of nine, to leave La Roca, Jorge Glas filed a habeas corpus petition, with the aim of obtaining his freedom.

The appeal is being handled by the Specialized Judicial Unit for Penitentiary Guarantees in Guayaquil.

Judge Patricio Javier Vidal Campaña ordered the hearing to be rescheduled for this Monday, July 8, 2024, at 09:00.

Appearances by Correa-supporting doctors and legislators are planned.

The assembly members of the Citizen Revolution (RC), Patricia Núñez and Jhajaira Urresta, will give their testimony, after presenting an amicus curiae.

In addition, Jorge Glas requested the appearance of doctors Darío Vargas and Juan Carlos Córdova, and psychologist Adriana Solórzano.

Since his arrest, Jorge Glas has suffered several physical and mental health problems.
