Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus announced on Sunday that he would leave the bench at Turkish club Fenerbahçe after failing to win the Turkish championship this season. “As of today, I am no longer the coach of Fenerbahçe“, declared the Portuguese in a press conference after the victory of his players Sunday evening in the final of the Turkish Cup against Basaksehir (2-0).
The technician, triple winner of the Portuguese championship with Benfica Lisbon and of the 2019 Copa Libertadores with the Brazilian club Flamengo, will have led Fenerbahçe to their first trophy in nine years. But the Istanbul club, which finished second in the Süper Lig this season behind its great rival Galatasaray, has not won the Turkish championship since 2014, an eternity for its supporters.
Praised by the Turkish press and adored by the Fenerbahçe public at the start of the season, the Portuguese, who arrived in Istanbul a year ago, had seen some of his tactical choices come under heavy criticism in recent months.
