Port Charlotte, FL – The sight of Jorge Posada, a New York Yankees icon, in a blue jersey is a striking one. But it’s not a mirage. The five-time World Series champion and five-time All-Star is lending his expertise to the Italian national baseball team as they prepare for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, beginning March 5th and running through March 17th. Posada began working with the team yesterday in Port Charlotte, Florida, joining manager Francisco Cervelli’s group for their Early Camp. This unexpected pairing highlights the growing international appeal of baseball and the enduring legacy of one of the game’s most respected catchers.
The connection between Posada and Cervelli is at the heart of this collaboration. The two were teammates on the Yankees from 2008 through 2011, with Cervelli initially serving as Posada’s backup. “He was my teacher when I arrived in MLB,” Cervelli recalled, according to reports. Posada, who played his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the Yankees, appearing in 1829 games, clearly made an impression on the younger catcher. “I have a great relationship with Francisco,” Posada said. “I feel like I am his older brother ever since I took care of him when he came to the Major Leagues. I love his energy. He is always very positive, very enthusiastic…I notice that he brought these characteristics to his group today.”
A Familiar Face in a New Jersey
For Posada, this opportunity represents a chance to stay involved in the game he loves and to share his knowledge with a new generation of players. While he never had the opportunity to participate in the World Baseball Classic as a player – he was injured during the inaugural tournament in 2006 – he sees immense value in the competition. “The Classic means a lot to me,” Posada stated. “I never had the chance to play it with Puerto Rico, but having the opportunity to be here today with Francisco is an experience I can’t wait to begin.”
The Italian team is currently in a preparatory phase, with an Early Camp roster that differs from the squad that will compete in the Classic. Players like Lasaracina, Mineo, and Quattrini are currently training in Port Charlotte, with Martini, Annunziata, Scotti, Bocchi, and Sireus also in consideration. The team is also looking to add MLB talent, with Kansas City Royals infielder Vinnie Pasquantino already confirmed to return, according to Cervelli. They are also hoping to secure the participation of Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe. As reported by Sports Illustrated, the Italian team will face a challenging Pool B schedule, competing against the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, and Brazil for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Beyond the Classic: Building for the Future
Posada’s involvement extends beyond the World Baseball Classic. He’s eager to contribute to the long-term development of Italian baseball, with the team also scheduled to participate in the Harleem Week tournament in the Netherlands later in 2026 and a Premier 12 qualifying tournament in the fall. Success in the Premier 12 would provide Italy with its first opportunity to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games. “I think it’s a fantastic group, there is a lot of talent here,” Posada said of the current roster. “I want to get to know the guys, be together for a few days, talk to them to put them in the right mentality, assist them to be positive and achieve success.”
Posada emphasized his intention to provide guidance and support to the players, offering his insights on hitting and fielding. “I’m here to help in any way I can,” he explained. “If I see something particular, I’ll point it out. I want to put the boys in the right frame of mind and obviously help out in every way possible.” World Baseball Network noted that Posada admitted to not knowing much Italian, but hopes his Spanish will aid in communication.
This isn’t just about baseball strategy; it’s about mentorship. Posada’s willingness to share his experience and passion for the game with a new group of players speaks to his character and his commitment to growing the sport globally. The image of the legendary Yankees catcher, now sporting a blue jersey, embodies a spirit of collaboration and a dedication to the international baseball community. The team will continue preparations in Port Charlotte, building towards the challenges of the World Baseball Classic and beyond.
The Italian national team will continue its Early Camp training in Port Charlotte through the week, with further roster announcements expected in the coming weeks.
