Joris Rotmans new professor Technical innovations for kidney patients

by time news

With effect from 1 February of this year, internist-nephrologist Joris Rotmans has been appointed professor of internal medicine, in particular technical innovations for kidney patients, at the Leiden University Medical Center.

Rotmans’ research focuses mainly on vascular nephrology, in particular vascular access for hemodialysis. Current vascular access options are limited. Due to the high speed at which the blood flows through the vascular access, complications such as vasoconstriction regularly occur, which in turn can lead to thrombosis and/or blockage of the vascular access.

In the coming years, Rotmans hopes to be able to develop new techniques for vascular access with the help of technical innovations, which will result in fewer complications. For example, he is currently working on a dynamic arteriovenous fistula together with researchers from TU Delft. The advantage of this fistula is that the flow rate of the blood can be reduced in the periods between dialysis sessions, so that the vascular access may continue to function properly for longer.

In addition to his research, Rotmans has been working as an internist-nephrologist in the Department of Internal Medicine since 2011, he has been the trainer of the differentiation of Kidney Diseases at OOR Leiden since 2018, and he has been head of the Kidney Diseases subdepartment since last year.
