Portuguese international defender José Fonte is a season-long reinforcement for Casa Pia, continuing his career at the age of 40, after terminating his contract with Sporting de Braga, the Lisbon League I club announced this Wednesday.
José Fonte took part in 33 games last season, playing for Bragaafter many years abroad, where he played for the French at Lille, the Chinese at Dalian Pro and also for the English at West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace.
Still in Portugal, José Fonte played for clubs such as Estrela da Amadora, Paços de Ferreira, Vitória de Setúbal, Felgueiras, Sporting – up to the B team only -, Sacavenense and Penafiel.
The experienced central defender has a total of 50 caps for the “quinas” team.from which they won the European Championship in 2016 and the League of Nations in 2019.
José Fonte is the seventh reinforcement for the “ganses”, after defenders João Goulart (ex-Mafra) and Ruben Kluivert (ex-Dordrecht, from the Netherlands), midfielders Miguel Sousa (ex-Mafra) and Raúl Blanco (ex-Celta of).
