José María Echarri, 87, has left the presidency of Orfeón Donostiarra after 27 years in office and seven re-elections. In the coming months, an extraordinary general assembly will be held to appoint a new president. Meanwhile, it will be the singing vice-president of the entity, Iñigo Vivanco Larrea, who will assume the functions of president.

The announcement of the withdrawal was made last Monday at a meeting of the entity. «Three words that I have said a lot in recent times come to my mind: privilege, honor and pride – said Echarri–. I thank all those who make it possible for the Orfeón to work. It has been an honor to be the president of an institution like the Orfeón Donostiarra. I also want to highlight the pride of being your president, the Orfeón are wonderful and will continue to be so.» The assembly responded with an ovation.

From San Sebastián and with extensive experience in the field of management, Echarri succeeded José María Vizcaíno in the position in full preparation for the centenary year. During these almost three decades in office, Echarri has carried out great institutional work both in the Basque Autonomous Community and in the State and has created a circle of friendly companies that make part of the activity of the non-profit association possible. He has accompanied the choir on most of its national and international outings and has professionalized the entity’s management, among other aspects.
