Josh Pierson will make his NTT IndyCar Series debut in 2027 after signing a multiyear agreement with AJ Foyt Racing to drive the No. 4 Chevrolet. The 20-year-old Oregon native secured his license following an October test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, completing the team’s new driver lineup alongside Dennis Hauger.
Josh Pierson Signs With AJ Foyt Racing For 2027 IndyCar Seat
AJ Foyt Racing announced on October 27, 2026, that Josh Pierson has signed a multiyear deal to pilot the team’s No. 4 Chevrolet beginning in the 2027 season. The 20-year-old from Portland, Oregon, steps up to open-wheel racing’s premier tier after spending four years in IndyCar’s junior category.
Pierson joins 2026 Rookie of the Year Dennis Hauger to form a two-car full-time lineup for the organization. Hauger was confirmed on September 16, 2026, to drive the No. 14 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Homes For Our Troops. With Hauger at age 23 and Pierson turning 21 in February, the pairing could be the youngest duo in the IndyCar paddock for the 2027 campaign.
Racing in IndyCar has been my dream for as long as I can remember. The variety of racing I’ve done has all been in preparation for this incredible opportunity. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way and tremendously appreciative of the commitment of a new partner that will be announced shortly.

License Approval Follows Indianapolis Motor Speedway Evaluation Test
Pierson earned that eligibility by winning from the pole at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca earlier in the 2026 season. Under the criteria, drivers who have won a single Indy NXT race become eligible for a case-by-case assessment following the implementation of IndyCar licensing requirements designed to evaluate drivers transitioning from junior categories.

Pierson completed an evaluation test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Team president Larry Foyt noted that the sudden requirement created a brief scramble for the organization as they coordinated the quickest available date to complete the review.
Officials from IndyCar, alongside former series driver Davey Hamilton, observed the test. IndyCar subsequently stated that Pierson met performance criteria including car control, pace, consistency and communication.

Pierson Moves to Andretti Global for 2026 Season
At age 16, he became the youngest driver to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans before focusing on American open-wheel formulas and establishing an extensive international sports car resume. The FIA gold-rated driver has collected victories and podium finishes across the World Endurance Championship, alongside appearances in the Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA.
Pierson debuted in Indy NXT in 2023. His strongest championship result came in 2025 with HMD Motorsports, where he finished sixth in the standings with two podium finishes and 11 top-10 results. Moving to Andretti Global for the 2026 season, he placed 11th in points. Pierson led the most laps of any driver across the 2026 Indy NXT field and started on the front row in the final three races, capturing poles at the Milwaukee Mileâwhere he broke Hauger’s qualifying recordâand Laguna Seca.
I’ve been watching Josh closely for the past several seasons. Few drivers at his age have his depth of experience, and his maturity and work ethic are remarkable. Over the past year, he impressed us in multiple tests in a Panoz DP01 Champ Car alongside current IndyCar drivers, and again in our Chevy-powered car on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. I believe in Josh, and we’re excited to be part of his continued development.

Team Lineup Changes And The 50th Anniversary Milestone Of 1977
Pierson’s signing completes a complete overhaul of AJ Foyt Racing’s driver roster following the departures of Santino Ferrucci and Caio Collet after the 2026 season.
The 2027 season holds historical significance for the organization as it marks the 50th anniversary of team owner A.J. Foyt’s fourth Indianapolis 500 victory in 1977, when he became the first of four drivers to win the iconic race four times. Pierson will make his series debut when the 17-race NTT IndyCar Series season opens at St. Petersburg on March 7, 2027. What sponsor will back Pierson’s entry alongside Hauger’s Homes For Our Troops partnership has not been disclosed.
