Joshua vs. Paul: Boxing World Voices Concern Over Rise of Influencer Fights
The highly anticipated bout between former world champion Anthony Joshua and social media star Jake Paul is sparking debate within the boxing community, with some fearing the increasing trend of professional fighters facing influencers could ultimately harm the sport. The fight, scheduled for Friday in Miami and available on Netflix to German audiences early Saturday morning, has drawn criticism from established boxers like Agit Kabayel.
A leading German heavyweight, Kabayel, expressed a cautious view on these crossover events. “I think it’s cool when you put together such an awesome event once a year,” he stated to the German Press Agency. However, he warned that frequent occurrences “would destroy boxing at some point,” adding, “If everyone suddenly challenges the professional, then it will get annoying at some point.”
The upcoming fight is particularly noteworthy given Paul’s recent victory over boxing legend Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in 2024. Joshua, a significant favorite due to his size and experience – standing almost 13 centimeters taller and weighing considerably more than Paul – is reportedly set to earn a substantial purse, potentially reaching the mid-eight-figure range.
This fight marks Joshua’s return to the ring following his defeat against compatriot Daniel Dubois in September 2024. The Briton’s career echoes with past clashes against boxing icons, notably his 2017 victory over Wladimir Klitschko, a fight that ultimately led to Klitschko’s retirement.
The sentiment isn’t universal concern. Heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk offered a stark prediction before the fight, stating, “If Anthony wants Joshua, he’ll kill this guy.” Kabayel, however, took a more measured tone, acknowledging Paul’s preparation: “Jack Paul definitely has a lot planned. If he thinks he can beat Anthony Joshua.”
Kabayel is preparing for his own challenge, facing Damian Knyba of Poland on January 10th at the sold-out Rudolf Weber Arena in Oberhausen, Germany. He views this fight as a crucial step toward securing a future world championship opportunity.
The debate surrounding Joshua vs. Paul highlights a broader tension within boxing: the allure of lucrative crossover fights versus the preservation of the sport’s integrity. As influencer boxing gains momentum, the question remains whether these events will prove to be a temporary spectacle or a lasting threat to the established order.
